All About the Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs rank among the top tier of franchises when it comes to NBA title wins. They are one of only four former members of the American Basketball Association (ABA) who are still going strong in the NBA following the ABA-NBA merger back in 1976.
They have a rich and illustrious history with some of the greatest players in the history of the game having plied their trade in Spurs’ colors. These include legends such as Manu Ginobili, David Robinson, Tony Parker and Tim Duncan among others.
Life began for the San Antonio Spurs back in 1967 as the Dallas Chaparrals who played in the old ABA. They were one of 11 teams who took part in the ABA from its very first season. In 1973, the team relocated to San Antonio after a group of businessmen from the city agreed a “lend-lease” deal to take control of the franchise with an eventual plan to make a complete purchase.
After the move, the Dallas Chaparrals were renamed as the San Antonio Gunslingers but this was changed to San Antonio Spurs almost immediately. One of the most popular franchises in the NBA, the Spurs play their games in front of sold out crowds on a regular basis. They have a number of attendance records to their name including the biggest-ever crowd for an NBA Finals game back in 1999. The AT&T Center is their current home arena and you can catch them in action by getting San Antonio Spurs Playoff tickets.
Spurs Playoff Exploits
The Spurs are one of the most decorated franchises in the NBA with 22 Division titles and 6 Conference titles apart from their 5 NBA Championships. They are also a very consistent bunch when it comes to reaching the playoffs, having only missed out on the postseason 4 times since joining the NBA.
In fact, ever since Tim Duncan joined the team in the 1997 NBA Draft, they have never failed to make it to the playoffs while their overall win percentage is also one of the best records in the league. Get Spurs Playoff tickets now to follow their latest campaign.
With Duncan, considered by many to be the greatest power forward in the history of the game, the Spurs have enjoyed unprecedented success since the late 1990s. All of their NBA title wins (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014) have come with the legendary Duncan in the side.
The Spurs have come up against the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Lakers quite frequently in the playoffs. Other frequent opponents include the Memphis Grizzlies, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Dallas Mavericks and the Denver Nuggets. Barring the Lakers, the Spurs have a win percentage of over 60 percent against all of them in the postseason.
