Based in Springfield Missouri, Springfield Cardinals has been playing as a Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals in the Texas League ever since the team’s inception in 2005. The team is also owned and operated by the St. Louis Cardinals, while it plays its home games at the Hammons Field. Ever since the team’s formation, the franchise has been attracting a large number of fan following and support. In the year 2008, the team dropped down to the third spot in average attendance. Even though Springfield doesn’t happen to be a big market, still the team has been enjoying a sound fan base even from the surrounding regions. Springfield Cardinals is also known for producing some of the most talented players. All through the 2012 season, a total of forty eight former Cardinals players went on to kick of their major league career with St. Louis Cardinals. Springfield is known for having several players that later went on to have a major league career. The history of minor league baseball in Springfield goes all the way back to 1905 when the Springfield Highlanders started playing. The team remained for almost three decades, and for several years Springfield didn’t have a team at all. In 1931, St. Louis Cardinals purchased a team which was located in Springfield and was called Springfield Cardinals. But following the 1946, St. Louis moved that team St. Joseph Missouri where the team remained till 1953. It is also considered that the current incarnation of Springfield Cardinals is brought back by the same group of people who brought it for the first time in 1932.
Prior to moving to Springfield, the same team played in El Paso by the name of El Paso Diablos, but due to poor attendance the team was sold and hence moved to Springfield. Since its inception in 2005, Cardinals’ 2012 has been the best season in team’s history by far. During its 2012 season, the team finished at the #1 spot in the North Division and also went on to win the Texas League Championship that year. This season, the team will be entering the tournament as the defending champions. In the playoff of 2012, Cardinals went up against Tulsa Drillers in a best of five playoff series and defeated them to meet Frisco RoughRiders in the best of five championship series. After defeating the RoughRiders, Cardinals claimed the league championship.
