Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders: A History
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders came into being in 1909. Based in Reading, Pennsylvania at the time, they were known as the Reading Coal Barons. Multiple name changes followed, especially during the 1920s. During this time, they were known as the Marines (1920), Aces (1921) and Keystones (1923).
Reading continued to be their home until 1932, at which point they moved to Albany to become the Albany Senators. Further relocations followed over the decades. These included moves to New Jersey (1937), Ottawa (1951), Columbus (1955), Charleston (1971), and Maine (1984).
In 1987, the Scranton-based group Northeast Baseball, Inc. (NBI) bought the then Maine Guides with the plan to move them to a newly-built facility in Lackawanna County. Following this latest relocation in 1989, the team became known as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons.
The Lackawanna County Stadium, known today as the PNC Field, became the Red Barons’ home ballpark. They became affiliated with the MLB’s Philadelphia Phillies. This remained the case until 2006 when the Red Barons became affiliated with the New York Yankees. Consequently, yet another name change followed and the team became known as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.
While the team continues to be the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, they changed their name to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in the year 2013. They have enjoyed considerable on-field success over the years, particularly since the turn of the century.
