Philadelphia Wings was formed in the mid eighties and is one of the four original teams of the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League. In its four decade tenure of playing the game, it has won six championships and a couple of Division titles. It is the only team in the sport that has played all 24 seasons of the game within the same city. The start of this year for Philadelphia Wings has brought new hope of increasing its number of championship and division titles.
Philadelphia Wings started playing the game along with Baltimore Thunder, New Jersey Saints and Washington Wave in the premiere season. The team wasn’t fortunate enough to get immediate success but attracted a lot of people to its matches through thrilling performance. According to the statistics, the number of fans drawn to it regular season games of the late eighties reached out to 12,000. The first success for Philadelphia Wings was recorded in 1989, which was not only special because of being its first victory but also because of the score 6-2, which ranked Wings at the second position. The era of eighties ended on a good note for the team and it welcomed nineties with high spirits. From 1990 till 1998, the team outshone a number of championships and stayed in the news as one of the most successful teams for Lacrosse. The new millennium although did not bring as many wins for the team as the nineties did. Though the Wings seem to be struggling at the moment, but they always work hard and put up a great show.
Philadelphia Wings has a heated rivalry with Buffalo Bandits since the mid nineties. It all began with the Bandits being included in the MILL and many thrilling matches followed that have left a mark in Lacrosse history. The player tradeoffs for Philadelphia Wings brought in challenges for the team which earned it a new reputation of being a team that doesn’t give its contenders an easy win. Known to have competitive players this season, the roster includes Brandon Miller, Ned Crotty, Kevin Ross and Brett Manney among others. It is being coached by John Mourdian this time who is not only the team’s trainer but also its General Manger. He has five successful championships in his profile as a General Manager and an honor of being inducted in the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame for having a great coaching history.
