The Penn State Nittany Lions have secured an esteemed position in the Big Ten Conference having played their first season in 1994. Joe Mason is accredited for coming up with the name in 1904. Before a baseball game with Princeton, Mason is reported to have described the Lion as the "fiercest beast of them all" in comparison to Princeton’s Bengal Tiger.
