It was back in 1931 when the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Temple Owls first competed. The game was won by the Temple Owls, 12-0 with Henry Jr. Miler as the team’s top performer. The team’s clashed once again in the following season with another win going in the favor of the Owls, 13-12. Even though the Owls started off as a strong team in the rivalry, the Penn State team caught on and gained the leading position, which it holds to date. About the Pennsylvania State University Basketball Program

The Penn State Nittany Lions’ basketball program was formed in 1897. It wasn’t until 1916 that the team was provided with its first head coach (Burke M. Hermann). Even without a coach, the Nittany Lion’s first 20 seasons ended with a successful 131-65-1 score (0.668 winning percentage). The basketball team’s most successful year was 1919 when it scored 11 winning games to 2 losses (0.846).
