Paris Saint Germain are among the most successful sides in the history of French soccer and the current champions of France. They have also become tough competitors in Europe, making it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the last three consecutive years. They have won a total of five league titles, eight Coupe de France and a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. PSG are now on their way to the US to take part in the International Champions Cup. If soccer is your sport then book your Paris Saint Germain tickets and watch them play live from the stands.
Paris Saint Germain (PSG) are not only the current champions of France but also the most dominant team in the country of the past few years. They sauntered to the title and also went as far as the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League for the third year in a row. They will be adding more quality to their squad during the offseason to become one of the teams to look out for next season.
Rise of a soccer dynasty
It was in the late sixties that a group of influential investors decided that the capital of France needed a strong soccer team. They merged two clubs, ‘Paris FC’ and ‘Saint-Germain-en-Laye’ to create a new team and in 1970 PSG was formed. As the club was based in Paris, it soon started garnering a large fan following which helped it achieve promotion to the first division within one year of formation.
However, that year Paris FC backed out of the merger and the team was split into two once again. PSG were relegated to the third division while Paris FC maintained their place in the first division. That did not last long however as PSG made a quick return to top flight soccer within two years and have remained there ever since.
A winning mentality
PSG have enjoyed immense level of success in their domestic league and are one of only two teams from France to have won a major European title. Their dominance domestically can be demonstrated by their five league cups to date. They have also won the Coupe de France eight times and the Coupe de la Ligue on five occasions. PSG have also been Trophée des Champions four times and even managed to win the second division title once in the two years they spent outside the first division. In addition to that, they have enjoyed a decent run in European competitions as well to win both the UEFA Intertoto Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
A rivalry to remember
PSG have a great rivalry with Olympique de Marseille. The rivalry is unique in that it is not between two local teams but rather between the two best clubs from the two biggest cities in France. The rivalry known as the ‘Le Classique’ has thrown up some incredible encounters between these two French soccer heavyweights over the years. They are also the only two sides in the country to have won a European title.
PSG come to the US
Paris Saint Germain will soon be making their way to the United States to take part in the International Champions Cup. They will be up against some of the most famous teams in soccer in what is among the most prestigious preseason tournaments in the world now. If you happen to be in the United States during the summer, book your Paris Saint Germain tickets and watch the reigning French champions in action live.
