One of the most prestigious professional golf tournaments, The Open Championship continues to enthrall thousands of fans every season. The Open Championship is the oldest men’s major golf championships in the world; other three being the PGA Championship, U.S Open and Masters Tournament. Open Championship Cities

Inaugurated in 1860, the first Open Championship was played at the Prestwick Golf Club. The tournament featured only professional players who played three rounds of the twelve-hour course in one day. Willie Park Sr. managed to bag the original trophy of the tournament, the ‘Challenge Belt’, after defeating Old Tom Morris by two strokes. The following season, The Open Championship opened to amateur players, allowing eight amateurs to compete in the tournament. For the first three tournaments, there was no prize money involved and the winner took home the ‘Challenge Belt’ that had a silver buckle strapped on red leather. Since then, the tournament has evolved over the years, becoming one of the most sought after professional golf tours in the world.

Currently there are nine courses in rotation that host the Open Championship matches. Four of the courses are located in England including Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club, Royal Birkdale Golf Club and Royal St. George’s Golf Club. Other five courses, Royal Troon Golf Club, The Turnberry Resort, Muirfield, Carnoustie Golf Link and Old Course at St. Andrews are located in Scotland. This season, the Scotland based links course Muirfield will be hosing the final championship match of the tournament. The eighteen-hole course has been hosting the Open matches for over a century. Fifteen Open Championship matches have been played at the Muirfield, most recently in 2002, which was won by Ernie Els.

With six wins, Harry Vardon has won the ‘Most Number of Open Championship’ titles. On the other hand, Young Tom Morris holds the record of the ‘Most Consecutive Victories’ with four consecutive wins beginning in 1868. Young Tom Morris was also the ‘Youngest Winner’ of the Open Championship and his father Old Tom Morris, a pioneer of golf, was the ‘Oldest Winner’ of the Open Championship title. The current 2012 Open Champion, Ernie Els, defeated Adam Scott at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club to bag his second Open Championship title.
