The University of North Carolina is the oldest public university in the region. Their Tar Heels football team is also the oldest college football team in the Carolinas and has played over a hundred and twenty seasons at the highest level of college football.

The Tar Heels played their first game in 1888 and faced a few problems during their formative years. It took them some time to become consistent but they did manage to win their first title in only their seventh year.

Off field troubles again curtailed their progress and it wasn't until 1922 that they added to their previous conference championship win. This victory however did bring some stability to their performances and they would go on to win a further seven conference championships. In 2012 the university also managed to win their first ever division title and added a fourteenth bowl win to their list of achievements the very next year.
