The New York City Football Club is the second club from New York to play in Major League Soccer. The club was established in 2013 after Don Garber, the commissioner of the MLS announced plans to expand the league. The expansion franchise was awarded to New York City and the team began playing its first season in 2015. The permanent home ground of the NYC FC is set to be completed in 2018, till then they play all their home games at the Yankee Stadium. The New York City FC played its first exhibition match in 2013, against the professional Scottish football club St. Mirren. The New York FC dominated St. Mirren and went on to register their first ever match win. The Spanish striker, transferred from Atletico Madrid in La Liga, David Villa got his name on the scoring cards with the franchise’s first goal. New York City FC then went on to compete in the Carolina Challenge and secured second place out of four teams.

MLS debut

The team debuted in the MLS with a game against Orlando City at the packed Citrus Bowl Stadium. The game finished in a tie with one goal from each team. Mix Diskerud netted the ball and earned the honor of scoring the New York City FC’s first competitive goal. The team played its second league game at home and went on to get their first win of the season against the New England Revolution. A massive crowd of more than forty three thousand turned up to watch the game and support the team.

First successive victories

The NYC FC recently got a win over the visiting Montreal Impacts, scoring three goals and conceding one. It was the club’s first successive victory, having defeated the Philadelphia Union in the previous match as well.
