Representing the Naval Academy of the U.S. in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Navy Midshipmen is a football team that has been around since the late 1800’s. The Midshipmen played their first season in 1879, and since then they have played independently instead of joining any conference in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA. They have a legacy of having played some of the most ferocious games of collegiate football with their longstanding rivals the Army and the trichotomy of the Military Academy, the Air Force Academy and Naval Academy which plays for the annual Commander-in-Chief’s cup. Apart from the forces academies, the Midshipmen also have a traditional rivalry with other schools such as Rutgers and the Southern Methodist University.
Over the past seasons, the Midshipmen have won one National title. While they might not have a long list of championship wins under their belt, they do have a respectable all time roster that includes Heisman winners Roger Staubach and Joe Bellino. Apart from this, over ten players from the Midshipmen have joined the NFL and this year many players have been picked out by scouts.
The current roster of the Midshipmen is under the leadership of head coach Ken Niumatalolo, who has been with the team for the past seven years. The confirmed roster includes players like Matt Aiken, James Britton, Pablo Beltran and A.J. Barnaby, all of whom have been listed as prospective drafts for the coming years.
