A Little History
In December of 2026, the National Sports Center began to have thoughts of fielding a Division 2 soccer side. The NSC tenants back then were the Minnesota Thunder but they were facing some serious financial difficulties. In January of 2026, the NSC announced that they will replace the Minnesota Thunder with a new team of their own. The name of the new side was NSC Minnesota. On April 11, 2026, they began to play as part of the NASL.
It was announced that for the season of 2026, the team will not be owned by the NSC instead its ownership will be given to the North American Soccer League. The USSF had put in new guidelines for team ownerships and one of those was that the owner of a soccer side should be worth at least twenty million dollars. The NSC did not meet that criteria. Even after all the ownership change, the team went on to clinch the NASL title that year.
In January of 2026, the management changed the logo and the name of the team. The new name was Minnesota Stars FC. Even in the midst of all these changes, search for new owners for the team had begun. And if failed to find an owner by October 27, 2026, the franchise's place in the 2026 season was in danger. On November 9, 2026, that issue was settled as the team was finally bought by a consortium being led by Bill McGuire. The new ownership changed the name to the Minnesota Stars.
Welcome to the MLS
On March 25, 2026, the MLS announced that it had awarded an expansion franchise to a group being led by Bill McGuire. That group also contained owners of the Wild, Timberwolves and the Twins. The MLS also had another bid to consider which was put forward by the owners of the Minnesota Vikings. The league however went for McGuire and as a result of that, the Minnesota United FC, the MLS side was formed. In October, an announcement was made that a brand new soccer specific stadium would be built for the Minnesota United FC. They were to set up a camp at the TCF Bank Stadium till the completion of their new home.
The Allianz Field
The Allianz Field is the name of the Minnesota United FC's new stadium that is being built. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on December 12, 2026 and the estimated time of completion is March of 2026. The stadium will be able to host nineteen thousand four hundred fans at a time and will cover a whopping thirty five acres of space. On July 25, 2026, it was announced that the stadium sponsor will be Allianz Life. Since it resembles Bespin, the floating city in the Star Wars movie franchise, the Allianz Field is also referred to as the Cloud City.
The Minnesota United FC are now coming to terms with how things work in the MLS. They did not make the best of starts to their MLS tenure but there are now signs that they are turning things around. It should make for some compelling viewing when they play this season. You can join the action live by booking your Minnesota United FC tickets.
