Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao was born in Kibawe, Bukindnon, Philippines on the 17th of December, 1978. Not being able to complete his high school education because his family could not afford to pay for it, he left home and traveled to Manila at fourteen years of age. For some time, he lived on the road. He had an interest in boxing from a young age. He began to box in his free time and and finally managed to get good enough to make the Philippine national amateur boxing team. The government paid for his board and room after he joined the team, and gradually he moved up the ranks on the team, making records the likes of which had never been made in the history of the team.
Pacquiao decided to make a career out of boxing in 1995, following the demise of a close friend who had been aspiring to become a boxer. At sixteen years of age, he began his professional career in boxing. His starting fights occurred in local places and were aired on the boxing program called Blow by Blow. His first professional fight took place on the 22nd of January, 1995 with Edmund Ignacio. He won the match and became the star of the show.
On the 15th of November, 2003, he fought a match against Marco Antonio Barrera. The match took place at t Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. This match is considered to be the defining match of his career. Manny Pacquiao won the match in the 11th round and gained the The Ring Featherweight World Title. This made him the first Asian and Filipino to gain the title of a three division world champion, a boxer winning three separate weight division world titles. He relinquished the titles in 2005, after defending them two times. On the 24th of November, 2003, Pacquiao received the award of the Presidential Medal of Merit. This was given to him due to his win against the best featherweight boxing player worldwide. The award was presented to him at the Ceremonial Hall at the Malacanang Palace. He also the received the Congressional Medal of Achievement the next day from the House of Representatives of the Philipines, in honor of his outstanding accomplishments. He was the first athlete to achieve this award by the House of Representatives. Pacquiao later challenged Juan Manuel Marquez to a match. The match happened on the 8th of May in Las Vegas. It turned out to be a draw, much to the outrage of both players.
Pacquiao was awarded the the title of the Fighter of the Decade in 2000. This honor was given to him by the BWAA (Boxing Writers Association of America). He holds numerous other boxing titles as well, such as Super Welterweight World Champion, Fighter of the year, Junior Featherweight World Champion, Junior Lightweight World Champion, Super Featherweight World Champion, Flyweight World Champion, Lineal Featherweight World Champion, Lineal Light Welterweight Champion and various others as well. Over the course of his career, he has had fifty-seven total fights. He has gained victory in fifty-two, lost three and two have resulted in a draw. Apart from being a boxer, Pacquiao is also a talented actor, an influential politician and a great music recorder. In the May of 2010, he was chosen to be a part of the 15th Congress of the Philippines. He was elected to represent the Sarangani province in the House of Representatives.
