Making boxing his life

Keith Thurman was born in Clearwater, Florida in 1988 and is of African-American and European descent. He was interested in boxing from a young age and was discovered at age seven by renowned trainer, Ben Getty who has previously worked with Sugar Ray Leonard. At the time Getty was organizing a boxing exhibition in the cafeteria of Thurman’s school. Since he liked boxing so much, Thurman saw this as an opportunity so bring home the sign-up sheet and asked his mother that he wanted to participate in the event.

Ben Getty quickly took Keith Thurman under his wing and so the undefeated 147 pounder went on to shock the boxing world and became the fastest rising name in the sport. He has developed a huge fan following around the world.

Dominating the competition

Keith Thurman fought his first amateur fight in 1997 and soon became a tough competitor to beat as he went on to bag six national championships in total, including the 2006 PAL National Championship. He scored more than hundred wins out of which seventy six were knock out victories. With a stunning record like that it only meant that Thurman was more than ready to pursue a professional career and almost everyone was becoming a believer in the young boxer.

In 2009 when Keith Thurman was climbing the ladder to success, tragedy struck when his mentor, Ben Getty passed away. He was later coached by Dan Birmingham who is known for making Jeff Lacey and Winky Wright hold the world titles and has also worked with Chad Dawson who has remained a former world champion.

Kicking off his professional career

Keith Thurman started out his professional career in a big way when he handed Stalin Lopez his first defeat on July 23rd, 2010. He was soon recognized as a natural born knockout artist when he defeated most of his opponents by knocking them out  on the ground. Thurman later appeared on the national scene when he destroyed the former world champion, Carlos Quintana in the fourth round and earned a knockout win which led Quintana to retire.

With all the momentum on his side, Keith Thurman went on to fight the Argentinean, Diego Chaves and ended his undefeated streak via 10th round knockout and won his first interim WBA Welterweight title in 2013. In the same year, he defended his championship against the Mexican tough guy supreme, Jesus Soto Karass which he won in the ninth round by technical knockout.

The big PBC fight

Keith Thurman met the four-time division champion, Robert Guerrero at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in 2015 for their duel in the first Premier Boxing Champions card that he won via knockout in the ninth round. He later faced the veteran slugger, Luis Collazo in Tampa, Florida in July 11, 2015 which he won via TKO.

Now for the third match, it was announced that Keith Thurman will defend his title against, Shawn Porter on March 12, 2016 but the match was postponed due to the injuries that the Clearwater native suffered in his car accident. The bout has now been rescheduled and with title on the line the clash will surely live up to its hype. It’s tough to predict who will win as both fighters have a lot of similarities regarding, age, height, age and experience. If you want to find that who will emerge victorious then book your Keith Thurman tickets and enjoy their battle live.
