Making boxing his life
Keith Thurman was born in Clearwater, Florida in 1988 and is of African-American and European descent. He was interested in boxing from a young age and was discovered at age seven by renowned trainer, Ben Getty who has previously worked with Sugar Ray Leonard. At the time Getty was organizing a boxing exhibition in the cafeteria of Thurman’s school. Since he liked boxing so much, Thurman saw this as an opportunity so bring home the sign-up sheet and asked his mother that he wanted to participate in the event.
Ben Getty quickly took Keith Thurman under his wing and so the undefeated 147 pounder went on to shock the boxing world and became the fastest rising name in the sport. He has developed a huge fan following around the world.
Dominating the competition
Keith Thurman fought his first amateur fight in 1997 and soon became a tough competitor to beat as he went on to bag six national championships in total, including the 2006 PAL National Championship. He scored more than hundred wins out of which seventy six were knock out victories. With a stunning record like that it only meant that Thurman was more than ready to pursue a professional career and almost everyone was becoming a believer in the young boxer.
In 2009 when Keith Thurman was climbing the ladder to success, tragedy struck when his mentor, Ben Getty passed away. He was later coached by Dan Birmingham who is known for making Jeff Lacey and Winky Wright hold the world titles and has also worked with Chad Dawson who has remained a former world champion.

In the same year, he defended his championship against the Mexican tough guy supreme, Jesus Soto Karass which he won in the ninth round by technical knockout.
