Iran’s soccer team is without a doubt among the best and the strongest teams in Asia. This Western Asian nation has for years ranked among the elite in the continent and have also qualified for the FIFA World Cup on four occasions. The success of the national team has been instrumental in putting Iran on the map as a respected soccer country. They have always been known to produce immensely talented players and that trend doesn’t look like coming to a halt anytime soon. Iran tickets are bought by their fans in big numbers worldwide every time their country plays and the passion they have is there for everyone to see.
Iran’s first ever soccer team took to the field on 25th August 1941 when they played their Asian neighbors, Afghanistan. That game was played in Afghanistan but it wasn’t recognized by FIFA, the sport’s world governing body. 28th May 1950 was the date when Iran squared off against Turkey in what was the country’s first ever encounter sanctioned by FIFA.
Iran began to make its mark on the continent gradually. The progress they were making was evident. Internationally, they showed their mettle for the first time in 1968 when they were crowned Asian champions. It was a monumental achievement for a country that had made its international bow under FIFA just eighteen years ago.
Expectations were high and they didn’t let their fans down either. Iran went on to lift the next two Asian Cups as well to complete an astonishing hat trick. Those three titles made the world sit up and take notice. There was more to come from them.
Iran went on to qualify for its first ever World Cup in the year 1978. They lost their group games against Peru and the Netherlands but recorded their first ever points in the World Cup by drawing with Scotland. Iran didn’t qualify for the World Cup for the next two decades. The lean patch ended when they qualified for the World Cup once again in 1998 and followed that up by repeating the trick for the 2006 edition. Their participation however in all three editions ended in the first round. Iran recorded its first ever win in the World Cup in 1998 in the game against the United States.
After failing to make it to the World Cup in 2010, Iran has qualified for the 2014 edition. They are in Group F alongside Argentina, Nigeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Yes, it is a tough group but then again, Iran has the talent to defy odds and make it to the next round. It certainly will be interesting to see which two teams get out of the group. Iran has the talent so it remains to be seen whether they realize the potential or not. It certainly will be intriguing.
