The Iowa-Iowa State Rivalry History

The rivalry between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones began in 1894 when the teams first went head to head. The Cyclones were victorious with a 16 to 8 winning score. They maintained their winning streak (in 1895 and 1897) and it was in 1899 that the Hawkeyes scored their first winning game (5-0). Since then, the rivals have played against each other 62 times with the Iowa Cyclones leading, 40-22. Witness them compete again soon.

The Beginning of the Iowa Hawkeyes

The Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team was fielded in 1902 with Coach Ed Rule leading the team to score a winning 10-2 record. It continued to enjoy massive success in the next few years, compiling a 37-15 score by 1908. This number is placed among the best start-up scores in the NCAA history. However, tragedy struck as the team underwent a few decades of depression, compiling merely successful scores. It was after 1943 that Iowa Hawkeyes finally redeemed themselves.

Hawkeyes vs. Cyclones 2015

With Pops Harrison as the team’s new head coach in 1943, new life was brought into the basketball program. It scored its first winning season in 1944 (14-4) after almost three decades and won the Conference Championship (9-3). The next six years were also very successful with the Hawkeyes compiling a 98-42 (0.700) till 1950. Since then the Iowa based team has been on a roll, winning 8 regular season Conference titles and 2 Conference Tournament Championships.
