The men’s basketball Florida Gators team will be taking on a fellow rival, the Missouri Tigers in 2015. The game is scheduled to take place at the Faurot Field in Columbia and this will be the second time in 2015 that the rivals will be going head to head. Previously, the teams met at the Mizzou Arena in a game that was won by the Missouri Tigers with a winning score of 64 to Florida Gators’ 52 points. The Florida Gators Basketball Program (Early Years)

The University of Florida was formed in 1905 and it was after a decade that the educational institution fielded its first basketball team. With this the Florida Gators’ basketball program started in 1915. Under the head coach C. J. McCoy, the team ended its inaugural season with a winning 5-1 score. After a three-year break due to the outbreak of the First World War, the basketball program restarted in 1920.

Post World War 1 Team Performance

In the next decade, the Gators outgrew the University Gymnasium and the team currently practices at the newly-built Florida Gymnasium. During this time, the Gators joined the Southeastern Conference of the NCAA as one of its charter members. In the next few years, the basketball team underwent a rough patch, enjoying only a handful of winning seasons. These include the time period between 1960 and 1966 during which the Gators compiled an 85-63 score and then in 1976 when the team accumulated 17 wins to 9 losses, ending in fourth place in the SEC.

More recently, the Florida Gators have stepped up their game and are now placed among some of the NCAA’s most celebrated programs. The Gators were the Conference regular season champions 7 times (in between 1989 and 2014), conference tournament winners 4 times (in between 2005 and 2014) and NCAA Tournament champions twice.
