Representing the University of Dayton, the Dayton Flyers' Basketball team is a member of the Atlantic Ten Conference and competes in NCAA Division 1. The Dayton Flyers are ranked No. 48 in ESPN's all-time ranking for the best basketball programs. Dayton's first basketball team was created in 1903, when the university was originally called St. Mary's Institute and its sports teams were titled "the Saints". In 1920, when the school administration changed its name, the athletic association also switched its name to Flyers in honor of Wilbur and Orville Wright's first aircraft, the Wright Flyer 1. It was Tom Blackburn's leadership that led to the team making six appearances in the NIT finals during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The Dayton Flyers also won the NIT championship for the first time in 1962 during Tom's reign. The university's basketball team continued to prevail in the following decades as well, reaching the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in the 1970s and the Elite Eight in the 1980s. Their next championship came in 1990, when they won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference before transferring to the Great Midwest Conference.

The Dayton Flyers enjoy considerable support from all around Montgomery County and the State of Ohio. When compared in terms of average attendance over the last two years, the Flyers basketball team is among the top 25 in the country. Their massive student fan base is known as the "Red Scare".

Some of the most notable Dayton alumni include Don Meineke, Don Bill Uhl, Arlen Bockhorn, Chris Harris, Roger Brown, Henry Finkel, Don May, Jonny Davis, Jim Paxton Jr., Roosevelt Chapman, Anthony Grant, Sedric Toney, Dave Colbert, Brian Roberts, and Chris Wright. Among these, Roosevelt Chapman is the university's all-time scoring leader for rebounds, assists, and blocked shots. Another player, Chris Wright, graduated from the school in 2011 and is currently playing for the NBA's Golden State Warriors.
