Coca-Cola 600 was the brainchild of the well-known NASCAR racer Curtis Turner. After watching a car race at the Daytona Speedway, Turner had the idea of building a race track in Charlotte, North Carolina. To do this, he joined forces with a local businessman and race promoter, Bruton Smith, to construct the Charlotte Motor Speedway track, which was completed in 1960. Turner then obtained permission from NASCAR authorities to sanction a 600-mile-long race event to be held every year on Memorial Day. Over the years, the race name has undergone a number of changes; initially, it was called World 600 until 1984. The naming rights were then acquired by Coca-Cola and it was called Coca-Cola World 600. Since 1986, it has been known as Coca-Cola 600. For one year in 2002, the race was called Coca-Cola Racing Family 600.

The first race was held on 19th June 1960 and the winner was Joe Lee Johnson, who was driving a car manufactured by Chevrolet. Darrell Waltrip holds the record of winning this race five times. Other drivers who have won it more than once include Neil Bonnett, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Richard Petty, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, and Buddy Baker. Jimmie Johnson is the only driver who has won this race three times in a row. A number of popular car manufacturers participate in the race, such as Chevrolet, Dodge, Toyota, and Ford. The current race champion is Kasey Kahne, who has won the race three times. Kahne won his last race in 2012; he now drives a Chevrolet, whereas his initial two wins were with Dodge.
