History of Chivas

Founded by Edgar Everaert, the Chivas have been around since 1906. Initially the team was meant to include international players, but after a tour of Europe, Everaert decided to create a greater sense of community by changing the name of the team from Union Football Club to Club Deportivo Guadalajara and including only Mexican players.  He noticed that a local name generates more relatability and support from the local fans. 

After the Mexican Revolution, amateur football in the country gained momentum and the industry began to flourish. In amateur football tournaments between the years 1906 and 1943, Guadalajara won 13 titles. This was also the period when the longest standing rivalry in Mexican football developed – between Guadalajara and Atlas.

Venturing into Professional Football

In 1943, the Liga Mayor was founded after several regional leagues merged. And hence began an era of professional football in Mexico. Initially the club did not perform well and struggled throughout, except in the 1948-49 season, where they finished third. Their nickname, Chivas Locas (Crazy Goats) was given to them in this same year, during a game against rivals, Atlas. At first, the name was considered an insult, but soon it became an official nickname due to its popularity.

Victories Follow

During the 1951-53 and 1954-55 seasons, the team managed to finish as the runner-up, which gave rise to the slogan “Ya Merito” (“Almost There!”). In the 1956 season, thanks to a late goal by Salvador Reyes, Guadalajara won its first championship. Subsequent years up till 1970 saw the team win seven league championships in a row, three CONCACAF titles, two cups and seven Champion of Champion titles. Thanks to this stellar performance, the team soon became internationally recognized, and even played a few matches in Europe.

1970 – Present

This time period saw a lot of ups and downs for the team. First came the dark era that lasted till 1983. During this time, the team struggled and the best they could manage was reaching the play-offs twice. But the downfall was followed by a mighty resurrection. After the hiring of Coach Alberto Guerra, the performance of the team began to show signs of improvement. They reached the semi-finals for the first time during this period and continued to be competitive for the rest of the ‘80s and ‘90s. However, by the end of the 1980s, the club began to experience some financial troubles. The team was subsequently sold for 10 years to a petroleum executive. Hence began the “La Promotora” era that saw the champion coach, Alberto Guerra, return to the team, along with lots of fresh new players. Even though the team showed some signs of improvement, by and large, the scheme did not work out well in the long term. After its 10^th year, La Promotora was still in debt and was finally put up for sale. Towards the end of 2002, the team was purchased by entrepreneur, Jorge Vergara. After a rough patch, it finally became clear to everyone that since the arrival of Vergara, the team had developed a highly competitive form. During this time, Las Chivas became a major source of players for the national team of Mexico.

However, after the release of Coach Jose Luis Real, the team began to struggle. After changing 9 coaches in 3 years, Jose Luis Real was brought back on. The next few years saw repeated coach changes and largely unimpressive performances. Recent times, however, showed some positive aspects in the team’s performance.
