The current Checkers team is the third to bear this name. It succeeded a former franchise which competed in the East Coast Hockey League. The team was first called the 'Capital District Islanders' until 1993, after which they became the 'Albany River Rats' of New York and participated in the ECHL until 2010. However, the first ever original Checkers franchise was formed back in 1956, which played in the Eastern and Southern Hockey Leagues until 1977.

The present team began their inaugural season in 2010 and played their first home game at their venue, Time Warner Cable Arena, to a capacity crowd of 12,512 people. This set their first attendance record, which was later broken twice; once in the 2011 season when nearly 13,000 spectators witnessed the Checkers defeat their rivals, the Connecticut Whales. Most recently, in the 2012-2013 season, the team went head-to-head with the Oklahoma City Barons in front of a massive crowd of approximately 13,100 people. Over the course of its existence, the Checkers franchise in its previous locations has secured several championships, including two regular season AHL titles, four Division championships, and a Calder Cup. The team has an incredible roster with star NHL players such as Brett Sutter, Chris Terry, AJ Jenks, and many others.
