Last season the Calgary Flames finally made their triumphant return to the playoffs after an absence of five years. It was a welcome change from their form over the last few years and bodes well for the future of the franchise itself.

Just a Spark

A fight between the NHL and the upstart league WHL was heating up in early 1971. In an attempt to capture a larger market share and stave off the challenge posed by the WHL, the NHL sanctioned the creation of two new teams, one of which was the Atlanta Flames.

The Flames made a relatively positive start to their campaign and managed to post their first winning season within three years of joining the league. They would continue this impressive run in the subsequent years as well but would fail to win any major titles. That is till the franchise was moved to Calgary in 1980.

A Burning Flame

The Flames got accustomed to their new home very quickly and won their first two titles, a conference as well as a division championship, in 1985. They made it to the Stanley Cup finals that year as well, but failed to win the game. They would finally rectify this situation in 1989 when they won their first and only Stanley Cup to date. They have also won three conference championships, two Presidents Trophies and five division titles along the way. They are now about to take on the Canucks in a pulsating game.
