Ovid Butler founded the Butler University in 1855. "Christians" was chosen by him as the school mascot, which later changed to a bulldog. Butler Blue turned out to be the first authorized live mascot of the school in 2000. Till today, three mascots have carried the name "Blue", which is the primary color of the university. These dog mascots include Butler Blue I, assigned in 2000 and it appeared on one NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2003, as well as on two Horizon League McCafferty All-Sports Championships from 2002 to 2003. Butler Blue II was appointed in 2004 and made appearance in two NCAA National Championships. He was also seen in three Sweet 16 appearances in 2007, 2010 and 2011 and three Horizon League McCafferty All-Sports Championships. He is still in service with the team.
