The club was founded in 1903 originally by three students from Madrid, with the name of Athletic Club de Madrid. These students previously played in a club named Athletic Bilbao, and as a symbol of association with their parent club they selected blue and white color for the new club that persisted till 1911. The new colors were red and white, and it is said that the new colors were selected to be white and red striped because it was the cheapest option available. The same material was used in making mattress covers and the unused cloth could be used for making football shirts, a reason that gave Atletico Madrid their nickname Los Colchoneros.
The club played as a subsidiary of the parent club of its owners, Athletic Bilbao till 1921 before becoming independent and relocating to their new home named Estadio Metropolitano de Madrid having a capacity of over 35,800 spectators. The team used this stadium for their home games till 1966 before moving to their present home stadium, Estadio Vicente Calderon which has a capacity to accommodate around 54,851 spectators at a time.
Atletico Madrid had a great playing record right from their beginning, and participated in several of the world class competitions. Their performance improved with the passage of time, and in 1920s they were able to establish themselves as one of the most competent teams in professional football scene of Spain. They were the winners of Campeonato del Centro thrice, and remained runners up for the prestigious Copa del Rey after a neck to neck competition in 1921, losing to their once parent club Athletic Bilbao. It was for their remarkable career record that they were included in La Liga in Primera Division in 1928. The team was moved to Segunda Division for some period of time during 1930s but returned to La Liga later. During Spanish Civil War their home stadium suffered major destruction, and their career saw a pause, but they returned to fields soon after the war, with an even more enthusiastic approach. The Spanish league La Liga resumed in 1939, and Athletic Madrid was renamed to Athletic Aviacion de Madrid after its merger with Aviacion Nacional.
