The club is on record for remaining undefeated in a Premier League season and also commands distinction for serving the longest uninterrupted period in the English top flight. The club became the first one from the south of England to become a part of the Football League in 1893.

The 1930s proved to be very eventful for the club when they secured their first key trophies; notable amongst these are two FA Cups and five League Championships. A lean period followed after the World War II, but they resumed their eminence by winning the FA Cup Double and the League in the 1970-71 season, becoming the second club of the 20th century to command such a distinction. Initially, the club was based in Woolwich, south-east London, but they moved to Highbury in 1913 playing at the Arsenal Stadium. The club has a long-standing rivalry with Tottenham Hotspur who competes with them regularly in the North London derby. When the club originated in 1886, it was titled Dial Square, but the name was then changed to Royal Arsenal soon afterwards. In 1891, the club was started being called Woolwich Arsenal. The Football League membership was granted to the club in 1893. At first Arsenal fell in the Second Division but were promoted in 1904 to the First Division. When they shifted to Highbury at their new Arsenal Stadium, "Woolwich" was removed from their name. In 1919, the team was able to secure only fifth place but were ultimately inducted in the First Division capturing the slot of Tottenham Hotspur who could not make it there.

In 1925, Arsenal hired Chapman as their manager who catapulted the team to new heights. He devised brilliant training measures including the recruitment of shining players like Cliff Bastin and Alex James who contributed to the team's supremacy in English football in the 1930s. The 1930 FA Cup Final victory could be owed to him besides the success in two League Championships.
