On tours, they are joined by a fourth member, Benjamin Thompson who plays the drums for the band.
Trimble and Halliday together attended the Bangor Grammar School. They met Baird through mutual acquaintances. They formed a band which was initially known as LifeWithoutRory. At that time the band’s fourth member was Patrick Thompson. Thompson left in 2007. The remaining members then changed the name of the band to its current one, Two Door Cinema Club. This name came about as a result of Halliday’s mispronunciation of Tudor Cinema, the name of a local cinema. They formed a MySpace page where they put up their music. A growing interest in their music by the people caused them to give up their studies at their universities. They began working on their music in a more professional manner. They released an EP called Four Words To Stand On in the beginning of 2009. The critics gave positive reviews. Their articles featured in a number of music blogs and their popularity increased.
Consequently, Two Door Cinema Club started work on their debut album, Tourist History, with Eliot James in London at the Eastcote Studios. Some of their sound mixing was done in the studion of Phillipe Zdar in Paris. The details of the album along with its track listing were announced by the band in an interview with NME. On February 26,2010, the album was released in Ireland and after a four days gap, it was released in the UK. It was also released in the USA in April of the same year. Tourist History was a success. In March 2011, it won the Irish Album of the Year 2010’s Choice Music Prize. It was the band’s first ever award. They donated their prize money to a Northern Ireland based charity called Abaana.
The singles from the album which really stood out were Something Good Can Work, I Can Talk, and Undercover Martyn. Something Good Can Work and Undercover Martyn were featured in Vodafone and Meteor advertisements on television. The latter was also part of the soundtrack of the latest version of the Japanese video game, Gran Turismo 5. I Can Talk became a part of the soundtrack of NBA 2K11 and FIFA 11. Two Door Cinema Club released another track What You Know which they performed on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon talk show.
2010 was an eventful year for the band. Following the release of Tourist History, Two Door Cinema Club toured Ireland and the UK in 2010 to promote their album. They performed at the University of Cambridge last June. They also performed at Reading Festival and Leeds Festival along with many others. They toured the USA last year and performed at the iTune festival. They then went to Australia to perform at the Splendour in the Grass festival as part of their Eastern Tour. After Australia, they toured Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. In the beginning of 2011, they performed at various venues in the USA and Canada.
Two Door Cinema Club’s upcoming tours include Orange Evolution Festival and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. They will also be seen once again in Reading and Leeds Festivals. The band is on a high as there is a lot of activity coming up this year and seems to be going places as Kitsuné Music, a French record label, has signed them. Their music has caught the attention of many people around the world. Despite, being so young, the band has garnered quite a fan following. So much so that Two Door Cinema Club tickets have become hot commodities. They are highly valued for the entertainment they promise. Considering their record so far, Two Door Cinema Club’s upcoming performances are bound to be a success.
