Tori Amos is from the United States, and has earned much fame in her career as a pianist, composer, singer and songwriter. She was born with the real name of Myra Ellen Amos in 1963, when her parents were residing at Newton, North Carolina. Soon after her birth her parents relocated to Baltimore and then to Rockville, Maryland and she spent most of her early childhood at these places. Even before she was five, she could play piano and by her fifth birthday she was already composing new tunes on her piano. It was for her extra ordinary talent that Peabody Conservatory of Music offered her a full scholarship for the Preparatory Division, where she studied how to perform until she was eleven. However, the free soul of this artist could not tolerate the limitations of learning music there, and the institute advised her to leave after discontinuing her scholarship as she was incompatible with their style of singing.
Later on, with the encouragement from her father who was a priest, she performed at local piano bars and continued nurturing her musical abilities. It was after she won a talent hunt contest in 1977 that Tori Amos was recognized by the neighborhood as a potential talent. She released her first publicly available recording in 1980 with the title More than Just a Friend. She adopted the stage name of Tori after getting a compliment from her friend?s boyfriend that this name really suited her, and left her previously adopted stage name of Ellen.
Y Kant Tori Read was the name of her first band that came into being in 1986, with its name being a recollection of her problems in learning to play piano by reading from the sheet at Peabody Conservatory. At her first group, Tori Amos? companions included Matt Sorum, Steve Caton, Jim Tauber and Brad Cobb. The band unfortunately could not gain a commercial acceptance among public, and was disbanded soon after the release of its self titled debut album. Tori Amos embarked on a solo musical career afterwards, and performed as a backup singer with many other artists including Sandra Bernhard, Stan Ridgway and Al Stewart. As a part of her record label deal with Atlantic Records, she was supposed to produce an album by March 1990 despite the commercial failure of her first endeavor. After some initial struggle, Tori Amos managed to compose and release Little Earthquakes that provided her career just the right commercial kick start. The album was a beautiful artistic narration of her early life about her upbringing and emotional maturity. The success of Little Earthquakes paved the way for her second release titled Under the Pink in 1993. Billboard 200 ranked it at number 12, and this acclamation marked the beginnings of a great musical career for the emerging artist.
Subsequent work released by Tori Amos included albums like Boys for Pele, To Venus and Back, Scarlet?s Walk, The Beekeeper, American Doll Posse, Midwinter Graces and Night of Hunters, most of them being remarkably acclaimed. Her work as a whole enjoyed notable popularity and commercial success, and became the reason for her winning as much as eight nominations for Grammy?s Awards. Her work has also been featured in soundtracks of many of the Hollywood blockbusters, including Higher Learning, Mission Impossible II and Great Expectations, released in 1995, 2000 and 1998 respectively. Over 12 million albums of Tori Amos have been sold so far, making her one of the most popular artists in modern days. Her charming personality has also earned her a place among 50 Most Beautiful People list by People Magazine in 1996.
