System of a Down was the brainchild of three school going friends who shared similar music interests and eventually decided to form a group to pursue a career in music. This was the start of the group but initially the members named it Soil, this band was founded in the year 1992 but after two years it was disbanded. In 1994 these friends namely keyboard player and lead singer Serj Tankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian decided to form a new band which they named System of a Down in Glendale California and later they were joined by drummer John Dolmayan. Throughout the career the band has been associated with top music labels like Sony Records, Colombia and American Records. The band’s music can be classified as a mix of various genres like hard rock, experimental rock, nu metal, art rock and progressive metal. The members cite acclaimed artists and bands like Frank Zappa, Van Halen, Slayer and Ozzy Osbourne as their major influences.

During a career that spans over almost twenty years System of a Down has garnered phenomenal success, till date the band has released five studio albums and sixteen singles. Their first album was self-titled that came out in 1998, this album immediately brought the band in limelight as it went on to chart in eth US, UK and Australia, it went platinum in US and gold in Canada and Brazil. The second album Toxicity that was released in 2001 was an even bigger success charting in many countries, it landed at #1 on US Billboard and Canadian Charts. This album went gold in UK, Germany, Austria, Brazil, EU and Switzerland, it also went 3x platinum in the US and Australia. Till date this remains the band’s highest selling album.

In the year 2002 came Steal This Album that managed to enter charts in different countries and went platinum in the US and gold in Australia and Finland. In the year 2005 the band released two studio albums Mezmerize was released in May whereas Hypnotize went on sale in music stores in November. Both tehse albums again landed at #1 position on US Billboard, Canadian, Finish and New Zealand charts, both were certified gold in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, these albums went platinum in the US, Finland and Ireland. After releasing Hypnotize System of a Down went into a hiatus in the year 2006 as all the three main members decided to pursue solo careers but eventually in 2011 there was a reunion and the band went on an extensive European tour performing at a number of music festivals such as the Metaltown festival in Sweden, Download Festival in UK, Greenfield Festival in Switzerland and Nova Rock Festival in Austria.
