While studying in university, Aoki began to experiment in the field of music, running concerts underground and creating do it yourself records.
Soon after Steve Aoki hit his twenties, he started his own recording company, which was titled Dim Mak Records and was launched in the year 1996. The name of his label was based on Bruce Lee, who had been his inspiration since he was a child. In the same time period, he worked with several bands, such as The Fire Next Time, Esperanza, This Machine Kills, with which he issued a record as well, and many more. His recording company worked with several artists as well, releasing music by electro house musicians like the Mystery Jets, Whitney, Scanners, Klaxons, Mustard Pimp, the Bloody Beetroots, MSTRKRFT and various more as well.

The debut studio album of Aoki was released in January of the year 2008 and was named Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles. The record went on to become a huge success and sold countless copies. Aoki then created remix music for several different bands and artists, such as Peaches, Chester French, Kid Cudi, S.P.A, Robin Thicke, Snoop Dogg, Bloc Party, Lenny Kravitz, and Drake to name only a few. One of his most popular remix tracks is When the Wind Blows, which was featured on the album, When the World Comes Down by The All American Rejects.
On the 10th of November, 2009, Steve Aoki did a remix for a song titled Forever, by Drake. The track features Eminem, Lil Wayne, Kanye West along with Drake. It went on to become a massive hit, making it to the top of the charts in the Hype Machine in December of the same year.
