Texas native, SoMo is yet another YouTube find. Born with the name Joseph Somers-Morales, he had no big plans to make music his career and listened to R&B for the sake of enjoyment. It wasn?t until his early 20s, when he was gifted a piano by his mother that the artist started experimenting with the instrument and later uploaded his cover of Chris Brown?s track ?Crawl?. Receiving a lot of hits, SoMo was encouraged by the popularity and recorded a medley of Drake?s songs that featured on his album ?Take Care?. In 2013 he came up with a mixtape ?My Life? that showed his musical prowess. Fusing pop soul with R&B, SoMo impressed many with his strong vocals and incredible songwriting. His debut record hit the shelves in 2014 and since then the artist has been performing live all over the country. He will soon hit the road with his ?The Fallin' Up Tour? that starts on September 16 from Nashville. Get a head start to the event with your Somo tickets.
SoMo came out with his latest mixtape titled ?My Life III? just recently and it has made quite an impact. It has eleven songs on the tracklist and his are excited about the prospect of what SoMo has to offer next.
Fate ? You Can?t Fight It
Joseph?s father was a musician and an active member of jazz rock band Duck Soup. Due to his lifestyle that involved a lot of touring and his lack of presence, SoMo tried to keep himself away from music. According to the artist, although he didn?t fight the art, but he also didn?t embrace it openly. Wanting to do his own thing, he played football in high school and did all those things that teenage boys do. Looking to live a normal life, SoMo distanced himself from music and the proverbial stage but music called to him in the most unexpected and strangest way.
On the Christmas of 2009, he was gifted a piano by his mother and then fate happened. He ended up learning the instrument, somewhat perfected it and used it to record a cover of Chris Brown?s song. It went viral. With a lot of encouragement from his mother and brother, SoMo got under the wing of engineer and producer Cody Tarpley. With him he recorded several covers and finally hit jackpot in 2011. SoMo made a medley of Drake?s songs that featured in his yet to be released album at that time - ?Take Care?. He recorded the covers day before the release and on the day of Drake?s album release, he placed the medley on YouTube. Garnering more than 4 million views, it announced SoMo?s arrival in the R&B music scene and started the SoMo phenomenon.
?My Life? ? Infectious, Irresistible, Intimate
Finally accepting that music was in his stars, SoMo buckled down and started work on his mixtape ?My Life?. The tape was made available for free on SoMo?s birthday on September 11 and opened up the world for him. Merging the spirit of R&B with pop soul, ?My Life? was a collection of passionate, palpable and powerful songs. It also showcased SoMo?s dynamic vocals and lyrical prowess. In an interview SoMo stated, ?It?s a cohesive story about my actual life. There are party moments. There?s heartbreak. There?s love. It?s real.?
The effort gave the singer-songwriter his first hit Ride. With no marketing in place, no label support, the album found popularity on its own and weekly recorded sales of almost 10,000 digital tracks. He supported the song with a seductive video directed by Dan Gotti and it was a fitting match with SoMo?s soaring vocals and sexy hook. He wrote the single for a girl who he was deeply in love with and came up with the lyrics when he was enjoying an evening with her.
SoMo Sunday
Following the success of the mixtape, the artist started ?SoMo Sunday? campaign. He released a cover song every week and spoke directly to his fans, creating a special bond with them. The series has till now recorded more than 50 million hits on YouTube.
Cashing in on the popularity, SoMo hit the road on a headlining tour in 2013 that soon became sold out. He ended up getting an offer from Republic Records and with them released his self-titled, full length album. Hitting the shelves in April 2014, ?SoMo? peaked at 6th position on the Billboard 200. Since the album came out, the artist has been on two different tours - The Wide Awake Tour and Spring Tour. He is now getting ready for his fall trek titled The Fallin' Up Tour that will also feature Kirko Bangz and Jordan Bratton. With SoMo tickets in hand, catch the sensuous crooner live.
