Born in 1962, in the City of Kennett, Missouri, Crow was the fourth child of Wendell and Bernice Crow. Her father was a trumpet player while her mother was a piano teacher. The musical background might have been an influence on Crow but she was not inclined towards making a career in music until she got into the University of Missouri. As a star pupil, Crow shone in many fields and was a magnificent athlete. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Composition. This was also the time when she joined a local band by the name of Cashmere and paid some serious attention on developing her music career. While at college, Crow was an active member of many of the music societies and as a result, she was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the Southeast Missouri State University.
Being part of the different kinds of music societies exposed Crow to different kinds of music genre and as a result, she has refused to be pigeonholed as an artist of a particular genre.
She proved her commitment to music by taking up the job of a music teacher in one of the local elementary schools in the city of Fenton. The free time she got while working as a teacher during those days was put to good use when Crow started performing with the local bands on the weekends. As a result of one of her performances, she met Jay Oliver, a local musician and producer who opened up new doors of opportunity for Crow. She began singing jingles for commercials for some of the famous companies like Toyota and McDonald's. This gave her the necessary exposure she needed to tour with the likes of Michael Jackson as a backup singer.
To date, Sheryl Crow has released six studio albums and sold over thirty five million copies worldwide.
