Herbie Hancock belonged to a musical family and started taking piano lessons when he was seven. He was able to polish his skills in just four years and with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed Mozart concerto. When in high school he formed his own jazz group and his orchestral arrangements were greatly influenced by Robert Farnon and in harmony, his inspiration came from Clare Fischer's arrangements. Hancock studied at the Grinnell College and by the time he was done with his degree, he was already performing with Donald Byrd and Coleman Hawkins in jazz clubs in Chicago. Byrd had his own band called Blue Note that was based in New York and he was able to convince Hancock to move to the city. In the very first recording session with the band, Hancock impressed everyone with his knowledge and talent and hence was made the leader. With Blue Note he produced the album “Takin' Off” and it included his first hit, Watermelon Man.
In 1963, Herbie Hancock became part of Miles Davis' quintet. By then he had involved into a phenomenal pianist, creating exquisite tones and colorful harmonies. His compositions were a blend of bop and blues, a rich combination that was rarely heard before. Along with Tony Williams and Ron Carter, Hancock played an important role in revolutionizing traditional jazz elements in the rhythm section. With his musical knowledge, he enhanced the earlier developments of groups such as Ornette Coleman's quartet and Bill Evans's trio. Hancock remained associated with Miles Davis' quintet for five years and produced tunes that became jazz standards. His astounding work includes Dolphin Dance, Maiden Voyage, Cantaloupe Island, Speak like a Child and The Sorcerer.
A true musician, Hancock continued to evolve and composed ingenious tunes that combined the elements of rock and jazz with African and Indian beats. His melodies tastefully blended electronic and acoustic sounds. In the 70s Hancock started using electronic instruments more and played the Fender-Rhodes piano through various signal processors like fuzz and wah-wah pedals. His 1973 album “Headhunters” marked his commitment into making more commercial type of music that infused rock, disco and funk beats. The album spawned the hit single Chameleon.
Herbie Hancock has collaborated with various artists and bands. In his 2010 album “Imagine Project”, he joined hands with some of the top musicians of the industry like Dave Matthews, John Legend, Chaka Khan, Anoushka Shankar, the Chieftains, Jeff Beck and Wayne Shorter, among others. With Chick Corea, Hancock released two live albums which combined their talents to become masterpieces. The jazz titans will be combining their forces once again and treat the audience to their acoustic piano playing. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime, so don’t miss their concert.
