Roger Daltery, lead vocalist of legendary rock band, The Who, is an artist who has a special place in the history of music as an icon. Not only that, he also made a name for himself in the world of acting by appearing in many movies, in theatrical productions and even on TV series and shows. He is also a musician who plays guitar, percussion, harmonica and trombone. Aside from The Who and his solo career, Roger Daltery has been a part of The RD Crusaders, No Plan B Band and worked with Pete Townshend. He has been playing and releasing some of the greatest rock music on this planet since back in 1959.
While at school, Roger Daltery developed a love for the emerging rock and roll music that was gaining fame back in the fifties and sixties. He first learned to play guitar through a guitar he constructed out of wood and a copy of cherry red strat. Soon after, he became part of a local band, The Detours, as the band’s lead singer. His biggest inspiration and influence at that time was Elvis Presley’s music and it was this music that turned him into a rockstar. He first began playing with his homemade guitar and by 1959, he started playing with an Epiphone guitar.
Soon after, Roger Daltery formed the band that would turn into The Who. At that time, he was working days as a sheet metal worked and playing at night at many venues including at various weddings. He formed this band with bassist John Entwistle, a classmate, and with guitarist Pete Townshend. At the start, Roger Daltery was the band’s lead guitarist but not its vocalist, a role played by Colin Dawson. However, after the band’s vocalist left, Roger Daltery became the lead vocalist as well as an instrumentalist playing the harmonica.
In 1964, this band became The Who and released their first hit single in 1965 after being discovered by Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert who signed them onto their record label. Soon after, The Who released their second hit song, Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere, and thus began a career that made this band one of the greatest in rock music. Roger Daltery as a powerful vocalist and Pete Townshend as a songwriter turned The Who’s songs into powerful ballads that are still played and remember today. This band became a leader, a voice for a new generation from the sixties. By 1975, Roger Daltery had begun acting and his role in the movie, Tommy, earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination and a Rolling Stone cover feature.
By 1980, Roger Daltery was producing as well as acting in his own movies; he was behind the hit movie McVicar whose soundtrack was also recorded by The Who. From then on, Roger Daltery has been behind some of the greatest movies of all time including BBC hits like The Comedy of Errors and The Beggar’s Opera. He has received an award for his outstanding music achievements, the coveted Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Roger Daltery is also an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, something that proves that this artist is truly the best of the best.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, aside from inducting Roger Daltery into its rolls, also awarded not one but three songs by The Who as being some of the Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll; these were My Generation, Baba O'Riley and Go to the Mirror Boy. Roger Daltery has also received the highest songwriting honor in the UK, the Gold Badge Award from the BritishAcademy of Songwriters, Composes and Authors as well as inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. He has also received the greatest American cultural award, the Kennedy Center Honors, awarded by the President of the US. Thus, this is truly a legendary and iconic artist, the man behind The Who, a singer and a musician who definitely should be seen live through Roger Daltery tickets.
