Rodrigo y Gabriela is a Mexican music duo that consists of Gabriela Quintero and Rodrigo Sanchez. Both belonged to middle class families and they grew up listening to various music genres like rock, folk, jazz and flamenco. In the early 90’s Gabriela and Rodrigo met at a culture gathering and became good friends. Initially the duo formed a heavy metal band and played for a few years. Failing to get any recognition both moved to the coastal town of Ixtapa and started playing Mexican music in local beach bars. Rodrigo and Gabriela failed to get any response in their native country so they decided to move to Europe and eventually took up residence in Dublin, Ireland. The reason for selecting this city was that it is very welcoming for traveling musicians. They played in a number of local pubs and bars and eventually got the chance of opening for Irish singer and record producer Damien Rice and British alternative rock singer David Gray.

The first album by Rodrigo y Gabriela was titled Re-Foc and it was released in 2002 by Rubyworks Records. Soon it was followed by a hit second album that was self-titled that was released in 2006. This was a stunner as it raced to the #1 spot on Irish charts beating other big names like Johnny cash and Arctic Monkeys. The album included two covers songs of acclaimed rock and metal groups like Led Zeppelin and Metallica.  Other tracks included "Diablo Rojo", "Juan Loco" and "Tamacun". The album also entered charts in other countries like UK, France and Switzerland. It received four and a half stars out of five from Allmusic. Third album by the duo was 11:11 that went into music stores in 2009. Released again by Rubyworks Records, it mostly featured cover tracks of world renowned musicians like jazz guitarist Carlos Santana,  pioneer of hard rock music Jimi Hendrix, classical and jazz guitarist Al Di Meola, psychedelic rock group Pink Floyd and Argentinean tango composer Astor Piazzolla. Acclaimed heavy metal and jazz guitarist Alex Skolnick and guitar duo Strunz & Farah were guest musicians on a few tracks of 11:11. This album managed to chart in countries like UK, France and Belgium. The duo has performed on the well known TV show The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

Rodrigo y Gabriela will soon start writing material for their fifth studio album and this one is expected to be an even better effort than the previous one.
