The phrase “British Invasion” is synonymous with pop music and legendary bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and many others. However, there is no such phrase as the “Russian Invasion”. If there was then arguably Regina Spektor would have been at the forefront of such an “Invasion”. Trained as a classical piano player, Regina Spektor is spearheading indie pop and especially the anti-folk music genre. The girl from New York East Village has taken the world by storm ever since her last three albums were released. Her very latest studio album, Remember Us To Life will soon be hitting the stores. To take a sneak peak and watch her play live music, get your Regina Spektor tickets today.

Regina Spektor is the winner of Broadcast Music, Inc. and has also been nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Song Written for Visual Media” category. In addition to that, she has also been nominated for MTV Video Music Awards.

From Russia with Love

Spektor was born in Moscow, Russia, to a musical family. Her father was an amateur violinist, while her mother was a music teacher in a college. Growing up in Moscow, she would listen to classical music and famous Russian folk singers. Her father would somehow manage to get her the music of the Beatles, Moody Blues and Queen. This was perhaps Spektor’s first introduction to western rock. All the while, she was getting trained to play piano. She was only 6 years old when she started to get lessons in classical piano and her love continued even when her family moved to the US when Spektor was 9. She was so attached to her piano that her family even thought of not leaving Russia but had to due to religious persecution.

Once in the US, the family settled in Bronx but was still without a piano for Regina. But this couldn’t stop the young Regina as she practiced on hard surfaces and tabletops. She finally started playing piano in her synagogue. It was in the US that she started to write her own songs.

Musical Journey

As she was classically trained, she was naturally interested in classical musical only. However, as she grew up, she started to take interest in punk, rock and hip hop. Her formal induction into the world of music was in the anti-folk scene in the Big Apple. East Village’s SideWalk Café became her identity as she frequently performed there, along with singing at various local colleges.

Albums

She self released her first three albums, which became hits amongst the local anti-folk fans. However, since these records lacked the backing of a record label, the albums could not become huge commercial success. In 2004, Spektor signed with Sire Records. The record label re-released her third album as well as her fourth album, Begin to Hope. The album gave her the commercial break that she had been looking for. The album was certified gold by RIAA and peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200. “Fidelity,” a single from the album enjoyed huge popularity and ruled the airways for weeks.

Regina Spektor’s fifth album was Far. The album would peak at number 3 on both Billboard Top Internet Albums and the Billboard 200 charts. The Rolling Stone magazine gave it 4 stars out of 5 and Access Hollywood called it “wonderful soothing summer sound.” This album had mega hit singles “Laughing With,” “Eet” and many others.

Far was followed by What We Saw from the Cheap Seats. The album was a collection of Spektor’s new songs as well as her old live songs. It also peaked at number 3 on Billboard 200 and Spektor undertook two tours to promote it. She also appeared on various late night talk shows for its promotion. The album had two very popular singles, “All the Rowboats” and “Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas).” The former would also chart on Australian and US charts.
