The group’s mission is to become one of the first mainstream a cappella bands, and in January 2012 they started issuing videos of classic and popular song covers on YouTube including PSY’s Gangnam Style, Fun’s We Are Young, and Goyte’s Somebody I Used to Know. The band released its EP titled PTX Vol. 1 by June, which charted to the fourteenth spot on US Billboard 200, and sold about twenty thousand copies within initial week of release. The quintet now has plans to make a holiday collection as well as a full-length album. In the last few months, Pentatonix tickets have caught the attention of a-cappella fans that can hardly wait to watch the artists in their live act.
Pentatonix started out with the three friends Scott Hoying, Kristin Maldonado and Mitch Grassi, all of whom grew up in Arlington, Texas where they attended Martin High School. They made a trio-arrangement to record a version of Telephone, after finding out about a competition held by a local radio show, through which they could meet Glee’s cast. Thought the three were unable to win the competition, their trio brought them enough attention in school, which is where they first began performing. Their version of Telephone, caught significant attention on YouTube as well so that the band was encouraged to continue performing.
In 2010, Kirstin Maldonado and Scott Hoying graduated from High School, following which Hoying joined University of Southern California where he pursued Popular Music for his bachelor’s degree, while Maldonado went to the University of Oklahoma to pursue a major in Musical Theatre. At the time, the youngest member of Pentatonix, was still completing high school. At USC, Hoying became part of an a-cappella band known as SoCal VoCals, a member from which told him about The Sing-Off, and decided to audition for the television competition. He then convinced Mitch Grassi and Maldonado to join take part as well, but the competition requires a minimum of five members. Around the same time, Hoying found Avriel Kaplan, through a friend, and together they came across Kevin Olusola via YouTube. The five members met a day before the start of audition for The Sing-Off’s third season. Their title, suggested by Olusola, was kept after a pentatonic scale which is a musical mode or scale with five notes in each octave. The band felt that the scale’s characteristic five scales really coordinated with their quintet. Their style is influenced by a host of different genres including hip-hop, reggae, electro, dubstep and pop.
On Sing-Off, Pentatonix performed various covers including Give Me One Night by 98 Degrees, David Guetta’s Without You, Florence and the Machine’s Dog Days Are Over, Kelly Clarkson’s Since You Been Gone, Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On, Sugarland’s Stuck Like Glue, Steppenwolf’s Born to be Wild, Britney Spears’ Toxic, Oops!...I Did It Again, and Hold It Against Me, Kaye West’s Love Lockdown, The Buggles’ Video Killed Radio Star, Erma Franklin’s Piece of My Heart, Kesha’s Your Love’s My Drug, and Katy Perry’s E.T. Since winning the show, the group has released a debut album while it has also performed live in New York, and was invited at Boston’s A cappella Palooza fundraiser alongside other groups such as North Shore, Dear Abbeys, Dartmouth Aires, Ben Folds and Delilah.
The Grammy winning artists, Pentatonix, recently released their latest album PTX Volume III featuring seven new recordings including “La La Latch” and “Problem”. The album debuted at number five on the “Billboard 200” albums chart. Their album That’s Christmas To Me has been charting the “Top Holiday Albums” list at number one since its release. The famous a cappella quintet, Pentatonix, is all set for the On My Way Home Tour for 2015. The NBC Sing-off winners will be supported by Kelly Clarkson for many of the tour dates. Venues include the Radio City Music Hall, DTE Energy Music Theatre, Riverbend Music Center and Verizon Arena, among others. This young a-cappella group is only one of a kind so don’t miss them in their live act, so just grab some Pentatonix tickets while they are still available.
In a recent radio interview with the “Elvis Duran Show,” Pentatonix’ solo female member Kirstin Maldonado shut down all rumors of the band splitting up in a recent radio interview with the “Elvis Duran Show”. She says that her band mates are fully supportive of her recently launched solo career and she has no intension of leaving the a cappella group anytime soon.
