Newsboys were formed by two young artists, George Perdikis and his school friend Peter Furler, who were immediately joined by other teenage musicians. These including their friends John James and Sean Taylor. The original name of the band was ‘The News’, which was changed once they travelled to the US, where they wanted to avoid any conflict with local band Huey Lewis & the News. They came to the US in 1987 following a record deal with Refuge Communications, where they soon released their studio offering Read All About It. In 1990 and 1991, they released a couple more albums tilted Hell is for Wimps followed by Boys Will Be Boyz, which they recorded with Star Song Communications. None of these three initial albums brought them any significant popularity, as their lineup was changing with each release. By 1992, they released Not Ashamed, which brought them attention to the Christian music front, which in turn prompted producer/singer-songwriter Steve Taylor to begin a partnership deal with them. He produced their record and wrote a majority of their lyrics during this time, remaining their main songwriter, and soon enough also began working as a second lead vocalist alongside James.
By 1994, the band was still undergoing changes in its lineup, including the joining in of mainstays Duncan Phillips and Jody Davis, with whom they released their fifth studio album, Going Public. This album marked their first real hit, proving to be a turning point in their career, and winning them a Dove Award in the category of Rock Album of Year. In addition, it put the band on the charts, producing the four chart-topping hits, Truth and Consequences, Real Good Thing, Spirit Thing, and Shine, among which the latter won a Dove Award for Rock Song Recording of the Year. Years later, in 2006, the same song came up in the top ten of CCM Magazine’s list of hundred greatest songs in Christian music. The next album, Take me to the Leader was recorded in 1996 with an even expanded lineup featuring two more additions Jeff Frankenstein and Phil Joel. This album too gave them three number one pop hits Let it Go, Reality, and the title song, as well as two number one rock hits, Breathe and Cup O’ Tea. Breakfast was another hit, which became a concert and fan favorite. The album also brought them their third Dove Award, in the category of Music Packaging of Year. In addition, this album is credited for spawning their only film Down Under a Big Top, released in 1996, which was inspired from the song Reality.
To date, Newsboys have released more than seventy-five singles, the most successful among which include I Got Your Number, Simple Man, Ten Thousand Miles, I’m Not Ashamed, Boycott Hell, Be Still, Dear Shame, Lights Out, Entertaining Angels, Believe, Breathe, Woo Hoo, Beautiful Sound, Good Stuff, Million Pieces, Joy, Who, It Is You, Your Love Never Fails, and Save Your Life, among many more. The band is touring yet again with another incredible setlist, so make sure to grab your Newsboys tickets in time before they are get hogged.
