Mastodon started off in 1999 when the band's drummer Brann Dailor and guitarist Bill Kelliher met the bassist-vocalist Troy Sanders and guitarist-vocalist Brent Hinds in a show named High on Fire. The members met and simply clicked each other so well that they decided to work together as a band.

With a great deal of live jamming experience, the band members began composing and producing some astounding songs. Their music was a display of ecstatic songwriting that was overpowered by very technical guitar play and creative riffs. Their music stance was loud and clear and the talent of each member allowed the band to deliver exceptional heavy metal, hard core music of the new millennium. No wonder they are tagged as of one of the most predominant metal bands of this century.

The band was inspired by a numerous famous heavy metal bands/singers like Black Sabbath, Neurosis, Thin Lizzy and The Melvins. They influenced them so much so that even today, one can feel that Sabbath’s tunes and Ozzy’s vocals drive most of their compositions. The band has released five studio albums till now that have been praised by fans, critics and have also enjoyed commercial success.

The band’s first album in line was release in 2001 by Relapse Records. It was a four-song demo tape, ‘Burnt by the Sun’, ‘Coalesce’, ‘The Dellinger Escape Plan’ and ‘Today is the Day. Shortly after the release, the band was on tour that allowed them to work on the extended play Lifesblood. This allowed the band's full-length debut album 'Remission' to come out in 2002.

In 2004, the band got breakthrough when it released Leviathan. The album stirred waved in the music industry with great intensity. The album was all about themed songs wrapped in melodious rage, savage and wild sounding guitar riffs. The album's sensational music was mainly based on the famous novel Mobi Dick. This effort was a big time transition for the band. Also, it was a huge development since the band earned acclaim and got their album listed in the Top Ten albums of the year.

Owing to the band’s turnaround throughout its career Warner Bro came forward and signed the band in 2006. Before this contract started the band released the album Call of the Mastodon. This album was the revised and improved rendition of demo EPs. Simultaneously, the band also released a DVD of its journey into the world of music. For this they recorded interviews and concerts footages under the name 'Workhorse Chronicles'. This effort became very popular especially amongst the band’s fans. In 2006 the band contributed in a tribute album by composing the cover Metallica's song 'Orion' which too became a monster hit.

Blood Mountain was the first album to come out from under the umbrella of Warner Bros. The album's release followed a tour by the band of the entire Europe. This album was highly commended through various awards and acclamations. Mastodon tickets sold out like hot cakes because the single 'Capillarian Crest' had already made the album a hit before the band could celebrate it live on tour. Later, the album won acclaim and great recognition when it won the band its first ever Grammy in the category of Best Metal Performance mainly based on the single 'Colony of Birchmen'.

The band’s fourth album Crack the Skye was released in 2009. Following the aura of bring a top ranking outfit, the band’s popularity kept on increasing. This primarily happened due to the success of the band’s fourth album which was a massive hit. The album was followed by the Crack the Skye super tour and the band’s first ever live compilation Live at the Aragon. The band released The Hunter its fifth album in 2011 which was ranked on No.10 on the Billboard 200 charts. Also, the album earned the band another nomination in Grammys as the Best Metal/Hard Rock Performance.
