Their recordings have stood the test of time and will continue to entertain generations for years to come.
Kansas is Formed
In the late sixties and early seventies, there were two main progressive rock bands in Topeka, Kansas. One was initially know as the ?The Reasons Why? before they changing their name to ?Saratoga.?The band consisted of Kerry Livgren (guitar, keyboards), who would write the music and songs. The second band was ?White Clover? and had Phil Ehart (drums, percussion) and Dave Hope (bass). In 1970, these two bands merged to form Kansas. The partnership was short lived as creative differences led to the dissolution of the band.
By 1973, Ehart and Hope had reformed ?White Clover? along with Robby Steinhardt (vocals, violin, cello, and viola), Steve Walsh (vocals, keyboards, synthesizers, percussion) and Rich Williams (guitars). Soon after they managed to recruit Livgren as well and once again adopted the name Kansas. Within a year they had signed their first major record deal and were on their way to greatness.
Kansas Step up and Deliver
Kansas released their first self titled album in 1974 and it charted at the hundred and seventy fourth spot on the Billboard charts. It was certified gold just like their follow up albums, ?Song for America? and ?Masque? which were released in 1975. They made it to number fifty seven and seventy respectively and laid the groundwork for their most successful albums to date.
?Leftoverture? was released in 1976 and made it to number five on the Billboard charts, becoming their first top ten recording in history. It was certified six times platinum as well. Their following album, ?Point of Know Return? also became a sextuple platinum album. It made it to number four on the US music charts and the single titled ?Dust in the Wind? became the band?s highest selling song to date. It made it to number six on the Billboard singles chart and was certified platinum, with over a million sales worldwide.
Kansas also has a live album, as well as a compilation album that managed to record platinum level sales. Their live album, titled ?Two for the Show? came out in 1978 and made it to number seventy eight on the Billboard charts.
