For those who wish to know, James McMurtry is a popular American rock artist, songwriter and band leader. Born in the year 1962, in Texas, McMurtry is also known to perform along with the band, The Heartless Bastards, providing rhythm music to its songs. Since a young age, McMurtry’s parents encouraged him to learn music and his father who was a popular novelist, gave him a guitar as a birthday gift at the age of seven. He was taught how to play the guitar by his mother and he went onto learning various chord combinations by himself. Growing up in the state of Virginia, McMurtry started writing his own pieces while he was attending the Woodberry Forest School located in the town of Orange. By the time he joined the University of Arizona to obtain a graduate level degree; he was performing at the local beer garden located in Tucson. During this time, he gained popularity and travelled to Alaska to perform at some gigs. He then returned to Texas, but then decided to move out of his parent’s house a relocate to San Antonio, where he worked several jobs as a bartender, painter, an actor and sometimes a singer. He started off by performing at local bars and night clubs in the San Antonio area.
McMurtry got his big break in the year 1987, when a friend living in the city suggested that the singer should enroll himself in a local folk songwriting competition, which he then went on to win. His songwriting skills caught the eye of several record producers amongst which included John Mellencamp. Mellencamp also knew McMurtry’s father, Larry McMurtry, who was a famous novelist. During this time Mellencamp was working with his father on the script of a movie. Mellencamp approach James and together they went onto releasing McMurtry’s debut studio album in the year 1989. This album was named "Too Long in the Wasteland". During this time, Mellencamp also asked McMurtry to provide music for the soundtrack of his upcoming film called "Falling from Grace". Other artists that McMurtry performed with, on the album included John Prine, Dwight Yoakam, Joe Ely and the Buzzin’ Cousins. In the coming years, the artist was seen releasing several more albums in the years 1992, 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2002. These albums were named "Candy land", "Where’d You Hide the Body", "It Had to Happen", "Walk Between the Raindrops" and "St. Mary of the Woods" respectively. After this, McMurtry was seen releasing a tour album in 2004, called "Live in Aught-Three". This album featured some of the artist’s most popular songs ever since his first release in 1989.
Three years later, McMurtry came out with his seventh studio album that was called "Childish Things". This album became his most successful release as it was able to win him Americana Music Awards for Album of the Year and Song of the Year. This album has a political theme to it and the song from the track list called "We Can’t Make It Here" started being considered as a working class anthem. The album that came forth after Childish Things followed the same political theme and was able to capture the attention of several critics. This album was named "Just Us Kids" and it was able to reach to the second spot on the US Heat Chart. During this time the singer released two more tour albums; "Best of the Sugar Hill Year" in 2007 and "Live in Europe" back in 2009.
