Hailing from Tulsa Oklahoma, the band features Isaac, the eldest brother on guitar. Taylor is the lead vocalist and plays keyboards, while the youngest brother, Zac is the drummer. The band started from playing at family gatherings and then moved on to playing at local events, at school and a few places around Tulsa.
The band approached manager Christopher Sabec, who introduced them to a Mercury Records representative, Greenberg. Greenberg heard the band play at a Wisconsin State Fair and was pleasantly surprised. He immediately signed the trio on with Mercury records.
The band had recorded a few independent albums before they were signed up with Mercury Records, which made them popular with the local populace. However, their first album with Mercury Records, ‘Middle of Nowhere’ in 1997, helped them emerge as a worldwide sensation. Spurred by a music video and an aggressive advertising campaign "MMMBop", a track from the album, reached number thirteen on the US charts.
Hanson became teen idols. In the wake of their first albums success, they released their Christmas themed album ‘Snowed In’, as the holiday season approached. Soon afterwards, they released a concert album, ‘Live from Albertane’ based on their very successful ‘Albertane Tour’. This flurry of activity was followed by the 1998 Grammys.
Hanson, although didn’t win a Grammy Award, it got nominated for Record of the year, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best New Artist. This greatly bolstered the young bands confidence and they released a few more albums.
In 2000 Mercury Records, merged with another company. Following the merger, Hanson released ‘This Time Around’, which was their seventh album. Unfortunately the album did not cause quite the stir as its predecessors had done, as the record label did not provide enough funding to promote the project. Furthermore ‘Island Def Jam Records’ denied the release of eighty Hanson songs, saying that the songs did not have enough marketability.
As a result, Hanson formed 3CG Records, their own independent label. The first independent album that they released was ‘Underneath’ which was an enormous success. The album showed Hanson’s culmination into a much more mature band and unlike their previous albums, it did not target teens. The album ranked number one on Billboard Top Independent Album Chart and reached number twenty five on the Billboard Top 200.
The enormously successful album greatly increased Hanson’s demand; more and more people wanted to see them live. They toured thirteen countries in approximately four weeks, with Hanson tickets being almost sold out at every venue. The tour was recorded as ‘The Best of Hanson Live and Electric’.
In 2005, the band toured various schools and talked about their unpleasant experience with Island. They promoted their documentary, Strong Enough to Break, related to the experience. A year later they went to South Africa for a social cause. They recorded their song ‘Great Divide’ with a school choir and gave the proceeds for AIDS research and prevention in Africa.
They continued their social projects with their next album ‘The Walk’; encouraging fans to walk barefoot and feel what African children go through every day, while going to school. This resulted in large donations to Africa.
Hanson’s recent albums include ‘Shout it Out’ which was released in 2009 and ‘Anthem’ released in 2013. Anthem marks the third decade of creating music, for the band. Produced and composed completely by the band, the album aims to unite people by music.
Hanson has produced quality music throughout their career. The three brothers have amassed a lot experience, which shows when the band takes stage. Their radiating energy and engaging melodies can be experienced by getting Hanson tickets.
