Halsey – Not Your Typical Pop Artist

Entering the music scene in 2014, Halsey has achieved a lot more in a single year that most new comers could dream of. She signed on with the label Astralwerks, headlined a huge tour with The Kooks and established herself as the fresh singer to watch out for with the singles, Hurricane and Control.

Growing up in New Jersey, Halsey calls New York her playground. During her high school she would get on a train and head to the city, get in a lot of trouble and head home before her parents would know she was gone. The unapologetically frank and open musician had her own mind from the beginning. While still in high school she was covered with tattoos, had shaved the sides of her head and dressed a bit weirdly – her own words. In an interview she revealed, “It was an age-old artist story. But I was inspired by watching kids live a destructive life in quite a cinematic way”. While most of her songs are autobiographical, there are some that are narratives of what people around her went through.

Her Distinctively Pop Music Finds Inspiration from Everywhere

Calling herself a mixed race – African American dad and white mom, Halsey grew up listening to a variety of singers and bands. Her father introduced her to NWA, Tupac and Wutang, whereas her mother encouraged her to listen to The Cure, Nirvana, Alanis Morisette and Gin Blossoms. Today she’s a huge fan of rap music. Due to these various influences, it’s hard for Halsey to fit her music into any one genre. While recording in studio all these styles creep into her compositions and one reference leads to the other, until the singer/songwriter herself doesn’t know whether it’s pop or alternative. Her biggest inspiration to date is the band The 1975 and she has been a regular attendee at their concerts. Frontman Matt Healy has influenced Halsey’s lyrical style as his approach has always been carefree and his lyrics are more like a dialogue.

Halsey Rocks, And So Does Her EP “Room 93”

In April 2015, Ashley Frangipane aka Halsey dropped in her EP titled “Room 93”. The five-track EP opens with the ambient single Is There Somewhere that’s beautifully dark and achingly raw. The simplistic pop sound immediately connects with the listeners. Ghost follows next and it’s this track that placed Halsey on the map. Subtle beat compliments the fast paced verses and there is certain tenderness to the song. Halsey showcases her vocal prowess and the swaying, upbeat music stays with you long after the song ends.

Overall “Room 93” has been a stellar effort, laced with atmospheric and dynamic compositions. It’s a fine example of Halsey’s bold, “I don’t care” personality as the singer doesn’t hold back and it’s an honest effort on her part.
