Hailing from Brooklyn, Grizzly Bear is an indie-rock quartet which has been active on the musical scene since 2002. The four members of the band include Edward Droste on vocals, omniboard and keyboards; Daniel Rossen on vocals, keyboards, banjo and guitar; Chris Taylor on bass and backing vocals; and Christopher Bear on drums and backing vocals. The band usually employs electronic and other traditional instruments. Categorized under the genres of experimental, psychedelic pop and folk rock, the music of Grizzly Bear is dominated by vocal harmonies. It is among those few non-electronic bands which are signed to Warp Records.
Beginning in the early 2000s as a moniker for Edward "Ed" Droste, Grizzly Bear came together in 2005. In the beginning, it was just Droste, the songwriter of the band, who released "Horn of Plenty" as his first solo effort which was more of a little home project. Released on Kanine Records, "Horn of Plenty" is attributed to be the first studio album of the band. All of the songs of the album were written by Droste. The album was released in 2004 and features some contributions by Christopher Bear who became the future drummer of the band. Writing about this first album of Grizzly Bear, the Rolling Stone magazine referred to the songs as "beyond hypnotizing."
In the next few years, the band was joined by Chris Taylor with whom the band had four performances as a trio. According to the band members, those few shows literally sucked as something was missing. It wasn?t until the joining of Dan Rossen that the band discovered its distinctive sound which marked the real beginning of Grizzly Bear. As a quartet, the band released its first studio album named "Yellow House" in 2006. The album was released on Warp Records and featured songs written by Rossen. The album remained quite successful and was ranked among the top albums of 2006 by Pitchfork Media and the New York Times.
Grizzly Bear released its first EP "Sorry for the Delay" in 2006. Their second EP "Friend," was released in 2007, featured the alternate versions, outtakes and the covers of their songs done by Band of Horses, Cansei de Ser Sexy and Atlas Sound. For this EP, the band also collaborated with the members of Beirut and Dirty Projectors. The same year, Grizzly Bear did a session of a Take-Away Show with Vincent Moon and the next year band recorded a cover of "Too Little Too Late" by JoJo.
In 2008, the band?s first achievement came with their second leg of North American tour where they played live with Radiohead. Later the same year, band started recordings for their third studio album "Veckatimest" which was released in 2009. Named after an uninhabited Cape Cod island, Veckatimest was the first major success of Grizzly Bear and landed on #8 on the Billboard 200 chart. In the first week of its release, the album was reported to have sold more than 33,000 copies. After receiving much critical acclaim, the album finally made it to the "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" in 2011.
On this 2013 World Tour, the band promoted "Shields," the bands fourth and latest album which was released in 2012. Produced by Chris Taylor, "Shields" was a major hit with singles like "Yet Again" and "Sleeping Ute" which was named as the 29th best song of 2012 by Rolling Stone. The album reached #7 on the Billboard 200 with a total of 39,000 copies sold in the first week of its release. The band has also made many noticeable appearances in festivals like Roskilde Festival and Coachella Music Festival. With cheap Grizzly Bear tickets in your hand, you can listen to the band?s finest indie-rock tunes live in your own city this time around.
