The band originated in Daytona, Florida as a student worship band for youth group in 1999. It was led by the youth pastor Mark Hall who is now the band's lead vocals and songwriter. Furthermore the band included violinist Melodee DeVevo and guitarists Juan DeVevo and Hector Cervantes. When the band moved to McDonough, Georgia in 2001, it added drummer Andy Williams, bass player Chris Huffman, and keyboarder and accordion player Megan Garrett. As an effort to reach out to the local youth, the band released two independent albums which were successful in the Greater- Atlanta area. This led to the band winning the Gospel Music Association award for "Best Song" and "Best Artist" at the regional competition at Palm Beach Atlantic University in 2004.
Mark Miller of the country band Sawyer Brown heard Casting Crown's albums and signed them to his Beach Street Records, which made them the first artist on the label. In 2003, the band produced its first album on the label titled Casting Crowns. The album propelled them on the Christian rock music scene where they became one of the fastest selling Christian debut artist. Overall, the band has won eleven GMA Dove awards and a Grammy for Best Pop/ Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year. Besides musical recognition through awards, the band has received success by being the most played artist on Christian Radio in 2007.
In 2009, fans purchasing Casting Crowns tickets had a slightly different experience at the band's concerts. This was the year when Andy Williams, the band's drummer, left Casting Crowns to pursue a further calling. Brian Scoggin replaced Andy in the same year and has been playing with the band since. The band still retains of all the other original members, however in Casting Crowns' most recent album, Until the Whole World Hears, Juan DeVevo and Hector Cervanted add their singing voices for the first time to a song. They join Mark Hall's voice on the song "At Your Feet."

The band members view the music group as only a part-time job where their full-time responsibility is to serving the youth of the Church. Several of the band members minister at Eagle's Landing First Baptist Church located in McDonough, Georgia. On Sundays, the members will provide music for the church's services. Mark Hall in his pursuit to reach out has written two books entitled Lifestories and Your Own Jesus. In interviews, the band always speaks about their calling and the need to reach out and mentor. It is clear in the band's lyrics that there message is one faith and inspiration. Casting Crowns tickets mean more than a rock concert. They are tickets to hear and celebrate faith with other excited members of the church.
