Hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, Lynyrd Skynyrd is known for its superb southern rock music. The band was formed in 1966 and has been active since then, except for a hiatus it took during the late seventies and eighties. Their music has been released by MCA, CMC, Atlantic, Universal, Capricorn and Roadrunner. This rock band has also been associated with other famous artists like Van Zant, .38 Special, Allen Collins Band, Rossington–Collins, The Outlaws, The Rossington Band, Blackfoot and Strawberry Alarm.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's members today are Johnny Van Zant, Gary Rossingyon, Michael Cartellone, Rickey Medlocke, Johnny Colt, Peter Keys and Mark Matejka. The band is famous for popularizing the so–called southern blend of hard rock music and was originally founded as The Pretty Ones.

They rose to global fame with songs such as Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama, but were beset by a tragedy when three of the band's members passed away in an unfortunate airplane crash in 1977. The remaining band members reunited in 1987 and were joined by Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother, Johnny, who took upon himself the mantle of lead vocalist.

In 2006, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is ranked as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time by Rolling Stone. At the 2006 induction, they also performed live, playing the iconic songs Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama. The former’s solo was ranked as the third Greatest Guitar Solo by Guitar World, with the band itself named to the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list by VH1.
