About Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1947 and has been active since then, performing many a piece of classical music as well as accompanying the Manitoba Opera and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as their official orchestra. Its very first concert was held at the Civic Auditorium in 1948 with Walter Kaufmann being the first music director of the orchestra, staying with it until 1958. He was then followed by Victor Feldbrill under whose leadership the orchestra moved to the Centennial Concert Hall, a two thousand three hundred seat venue.

In 1992, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, then led by Bramwell Tovey as the musical director founded the New Music Festival, with Glenn Buhr, the orchestra’s Composer in Residence. The orchestra was led by Andrey Boreyko from 2001 to 2006. Under his leadership, a number of changes occurred and the orchestra struggled through troubled times, eventually persevering and rising to greater heights. In 2006, Alexander Mickelthwate became the orchestra’s music director, the eighth person to hold this position. Since then, his contract has been extended two times and he has led the orchestra to much more fame, as well as introduced many innovative productions and programs. During the 2011 to 2012 season, the Sistema Winnipeg was founded, a program providing music education to disadvantaged children, inspired by El Sistema in Venezuela.

The orchestra has also released a number of albums, including Mozartian in 1993, Music for Violin and Orchestra in 1998, Lark Ascending in 1998, Songs of Paradise in 1998, Winter Poems in 1998 and many more since then. Its mission is to provide exceptional music experiences for the people in Manitoba and, added to the music director, it benefits from the leadership and musicality of resident conductor Richard Lee, composer in residence Vincent Ho and conductor laureate Bramwell Tovey.

It is an important part of the culture of Winnipeg and performs over eighty concerts each year to more than one hundred thousand people. This includes classical pieces, Pops concerts, family concerts, children’s concerts and many educational performances. It has been the site of many hundred Canadian premieres and world premieres. It is particularly known for its New Music Festival which plays host to international famous composers, whose music is played live each year. It is notable for lending musical support to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Manitoba Opera, with many of its musicians also members of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. It also tours Manitoba each year, as part of its yearly Holiday Express Tour.

This tour visits such cities as Virden, Neepawa, Portage la Prairie, Winkler and Morden. It also firmly believes in the importance of community outreach and education, with its programs reaching students in nursery schools to high school to universities, reaching more than twenty five thousand students each year. It emphasizes a number of values; chiefly artistic excellence, stewardship, organizational strength, entrepreneurship, collaboration, community leadership, inclusion, innovation, and respect.
