After the previous funding had ended, to manage and produce Viva El Paso, a nonprofit corporation was established in 1966, with the name El Paso Association for the Performing Arts (EPAPA). Later on, El Paso Association for the Performing Arts  made this musical a yearly affair with the help of, El Paso Community College, El Paso Community Foundation, the Convention and Visitor's Bureau, El Paso's City Arts Resources Department and, Private Industry Council. Which started off as a variety show soon turned into El Paso’s pride and joy.

Viva El Paso features all the elements of performance like vocal and instrumental music, narration, dramatic scenes along with dance in various kinds of styles including jazz, folklorico, ballet, modern and flamenco. Viva El Paso being an outdoor drama is a perfect entertainment for the area residents and tourists. This world class tourist attraction also provides theatre technicians and local performing artists with employment opportunities as well. This two hour long show is staged at the famous McKelligon Canyon Amphitheater.  This amphitheater was constructed to accommodate the El Paso del Norte which is a historic outdoor drama, opened on July 4, 1976 as a part of the nationwide Bicentennial celebrations. The show lasted for two years and later on it was replaced by this lively, youth-oriented and entertaining show Viva El Paso.

Each year, more than approximately 25,000 visitors come to witness this amazing musical from across the country. Set against the mountainous backdrop of the canyon, Viva El Paso never disappoints its audience. El Paso Association for the Performing Arts which produces the show has Hector Serrano as the EPCC Head of the Drama Department. He is also the creator and developer of Viva El Paso. Under his brilliance and guidance, several young artists have experience their first professional theatrical endeavors, on stage and behind the scenes. The creative costumes of Viva El Paso are designed by the nationally recognized designer, Donald Pasco from Long Beach, California.

Viva El Paso has now become more of an outdoor musical after going under the direction of Jaime Barba, Dance and Film and the UTEP Dinner Theatre and UTEP Theater Arts. It celebrated its thirtieth anniversary with its 2007 season. Viva El Paso has the most talented artistic staff which include,  Evanie Gamboa  as the stage manager, Bahoula Puentes-Polo on character dances. Superb chorographers like Nina Gomez for Spanish choreography, Jaime Carrasco for Mexican choreography along with Dr. Cynthia Jay for vocal direction and Beth Leffler as costume mistress.
