Having travelled a long, rewarding and rich twisting road, Twyla Tharp danced from avant-garde to Broadway. Instead of taking a retrospective approach on this grand celebratory tour, Tharp and her troupe has announced two new works. “Preludes and Fugues” is set to the Bach’s rousing Well-Tempered Clavier, whereas “Yowzie” is an energetic, stomping piece that features the music by New Orleans’ rollicking pianist Henry Butler and slide trumpeter Steven Bernstein.
Known for creating complex and ambitious dance works, Twyla Tharp has helped bridge popular and classical forms. In this celebratory tour every dance will be introduced by a fanfare and John Zorn will serve as the composer and costumes have been designed by Santo Loquasto. Some of the top dancers have been roped in for this production who have long histories with the diva. Tharp has nurtured the talent of many people, cultivating them as dancers and in her words, “establishing identity together”. Veterans like Matthew Dibble, John Selya, Rika Okamoto and Ron Todorowski will be part of the tour and Tharp has rounded in some fresh talent as well. Newbie, Ramona Kelley, Kaitlyn Gilliland and Reed Tankersley will be seen in this production.
