The brainchild of Giacomo Puccini
Turandot is a three act opera which was created by Giacomo Puccini who is recognized as, "the greatest composers of Italian opera after Verdi." He is also famous for his other operas, 'Madama Butterfly,' 'La bohème' and 'Tosca.' Though Puccini was never able to finish his work on Turandot before his death in 1924, it was completed by Franco Alfano a couple of years later. The opera is based on the commedia dell'arte play of the same name by Count Carlo Gozzi.
What is it about?
The story of this opera takes place in China and revolves around Prince Calaf who finds himself in love with the cold princess Turandot. To get permission to marry her, he has to solve three riddles which he eventually does. The princess however still turns him down. Calaf then gives Turandot a way out. He tells the princess that if she can learn his name before dawn of the next day, he will die at daybreak.
