The Nutcracker: A theatrical masterpiece
The Nutcracker is incredibly popular throughout the world. The two act ballet was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Petipa is best known for his work in ballets like, ‘The Pharoah’s Daughter,’ ‘Le Talisman’ and ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ among others whereas Ivanov is famous for his contributions in, ‘Dance of the Little Swans’ and ‘Cinderella.’ The Nutcracker’s score was given by the Russian composer of the late Romantic period, Pytor IIyich Tchaikovsky. It is based on the tale of, ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’ which was penned down by the Prussian romantic author of fantasy and horror, E.T.A Hoffman.
The Nutcracker debuted at St. Petersburg’s Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in 1892, together with last opera by Tchaikovsky titled, ‘Iolanta.’ The performances were conducted by the Italian composer, Riccardo Drigo and starred names like, Antonietta Dell’Era, Pravel Gerdt, Sergi Legat and Timofey Stukolkin among others. The premiere show of The Nutcracker did not live up to the hype and received lukewarm response from the critics.
In the 20th century, The Nutcracker was revived. It performed for the first time outside Russia in Budapest in 1927 and was choreographed by Ede Brada. Seven years later in 1934, Nicholas Sergeyev staged the first complete performance of the ballet in England and soon Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo performed The Nutcracker in New York City in 1940. Four years later, it arrived in the United States and was presented by the San Francisco Ballet to widespread acclaim. Since then, San Francisco Ballet has been staging it every Christmas Eve and debuted new productions in, 1944, 1954, 1967 and 2004.
